Pacified smokers: I feel safer already.

I’ve had a hard time getting my head around some of the airport security measures implemented over the past 6 years, advertised as tactics to protect us, but really just reactions to each new horrible event as it happens. Taking my shoes off to go through airport security is one of the things I think is ridiculous – a reactionary measure to the crazy guy who tried to light his shoes on fire a few years back.

Don’t get me started on the 3 oz. liquid restrictions. I got schooled last week en route to SFO about the TEENY bottle of eye drops that was floating loosely in my purse. Apparently the terrorists win when we don’t secure eye drops in a ziploc bag.

The good news is that smokers get their lighters back. As a former smoker, I can safely say that it is a very good move. The most tangible threats I feel each time I walk through the airport are agitated smokers, knocking small children and grannies out of the way as they quest for the nearest designated smoking area.

Here’s one of the smartest things to be said by a TSA official, ever:  ”Taking lighters away is security theater,” Transportation Security Administration chief Kip Hawley.

THANK YOU.

Starting Aug. 4, air travelers will be allowed to carry on disposable butane lighters, such as Bics, and refillable lighters, including Zippos, according to The New York Times. A prohibition on torch-style lighters, which have hotter flames, will continue.
